On Monday, December 9 at 6:30 pm, the Portage Rotary Club will host the 16th Annual Portage Hockey Classic featuring crosstown ivals Portage Northern vs Portage Central.
The Hockey Classic is a fund raiser for the Portage Rotary Club. The Portage Rotary Club was chartered in 1967 and focuses its efforts on youth related projects and on the entire family as well. The Portage Rotary Club has concentrated on developing tomorrow’s leaders by providing a significant number of higher education scholarships. Funds raised at this event contribute to the scholarships offered by the Rotary.
This game typically draws 1,500 - 2,000 fans and has been featured as the Bauer Game of the week. The game features many fun "extras" including a Portage Central and Portage Northern "Futures" game played by younger hockey players that live in the Central or Northern school districts and participate in KOHA, the local youth hockey organization. "Chuck a Puck" is featured in the second intermission and offers an opportunity for kids and parents to purchase pucks and throw them onto the ice at various targets that represent various prizes available.
The winning team is presented with the Portage Canoe, an amazing, handcrafted canoe that showcases the score of each game through the years. The winning team retains possession of the trophy until the next Portage Classic.
